‘Real Friends’ was a schools touring show made in collaboration with Leep1 (Leeds People First). The play was performed to year 5 and 6 pupils and explored hate/mate crime, bullying, invisible disabilities and more.
We asked the question, "What is strength?".

The play was interactive. We would 'freeze the action' and the pupils would discuss what is happening in the scene. We then had live conversations about the issues raised so far. We then revisited and changed the action, based on the pupil’s suggestions and observations. This technique is called forum theatre.

During 2018-20 the ‘Real Friends’ project proved to be a valuable addition to Leeds primary school’s education programme; not just for people with learning disabilities, but all people.

The project was supported by a workshop after the performance, plus an in-depth teacher’s resource pack.

“It’s been a pleasure collaborating with the fantastic Bright Sparks Theatre to put on a show with our wonderful performers. The project has an amazing impact. It really helps the school children to look at learning disabilities and invisible disabilities in a different way, not to judge someone because they are different. It raises awareness of Hate Crime amongst the younger generation and provides a way to change their own perceptions through drama.”
